Understanding how a map communicates distance and features relies on two tools: the scale and the legend. The scale translates distances on the map into real-world distances, so you can measure how far apart places are. The legend explains symbols and colors, telling you what features the map represents—roads, rivers, parks, cities, and more. Together, they let you read the map accurately: you know what each mark means and you can convert map measurements into actual distances. The other statements miss important parts—weather isn’t described by a map legend, and maps do need legends to interpret symbols.
